DPI(Personal Protective Equipment) are described as “any equipment des
designed to be worn and held by the worker for the purpose of protecting him against one or more risks likely to threaten safety or health during work, as well as any complement or accessory intended for this purpose".
What are third category PPE
The most common third category PPE in working environments are:
- helmets, which protect the head from accidental falls or objects falling from above.
- clothing, designed to protect the wearer from accidental falls while working at heights.
- self-contained breathing apparatus, also known as full face respirators or respirator masks, essential to protect workers from serious health risks, such as diseases caused by contact with harmful chemicals, toxic gases or dangerous dust.
Pursuant to the Regulation (UE) n. 425 of 2016, third category PPE is personal protective equipment designed to protect the wearer from the risk of death, from serious damage to health or injury
of a permanent nature.
Personal Protective Equipment Regulations
The reference legislation on Personal Protective Equipment, including third category ones, is the aforementioned Regulation(UE) n. 425 of 2016, which defines the rules that PPE manufacturers must comply with. Legislative Decree no. 81/2008, Instead, clarifies what the obligations of employers are, of the safety officers and the workers themselves.
Training
Paragraph 5 of the art. 77 of the D. Lgs. n. 81/2008 establishes the obligation of education and training for all workers called upon to use third category Personal Protective Equipment while carrying out their duties, essential for workers to understand how to wear, use and maintain these devices useful for protecting yourself from the risks present in the workplace, avoiding serious injury or death.
Thetheoretical part covers topics such as the choice of PPE based on risks, the methods of use and maintenance, the regulations and obligations regarding PPE and the procedures to be followed in emergency situations.
The theoretical module is followed by practical training, which takes place in environments specially set up to simulate real working conditions. This part of the course allows workers to learn how to use equipment correctly, even in emergency situations and first aid.
